How to Make a Crib Safe for an Infant

March 3rd, 2008 by Jonathan Schellack

At the risk of becoming paranoid, which I suppose it a risk every new parent faces, I’ve subscribed to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission’s recall email list (you can sign yourself up by going to https://www.cpsc.gov/cpsclist.aspx). Many of the recall emails that I get - and I get about one a week - are about lead paint in products sold at some place like the Dollar Store or Family Dollar or something else with the name “Dollar” in it. Thus I have made it a habit to not shop for baby stuff at those stores.
In addition to just recalls, though, occasionally I’ll see press releases such as this one, which is titled, “Building Baby Safety From the Ground Up. The CPSC states that they’re aware of 97 crib-related deaths from 2002 through 2004, and so they suggest the following to help prevent the possibility of that sort of tragedy:

  • Half of these deaths were in cribs with bedding such as pillows and quilts, and about half of those deaths were due to suffocation from an infant ending up face down in the bedding. This is, of course, why it’s recommended that you (1) don’t put big blankets, pillows, or quilts in an infant’s crib and that (2) all newborns are placed on their backs to sleep
  • Thirty-percent of the crib deaths had to due with old cribs that allowed an infant to get stuck and/or trapped in spaces around the crib, such as between the crib and a too-small mattress or with broken parts.
  • The other deaths were associated with any of the following:
    • Accessories in or around the crib such as window cords
    • Falls out of cribs (make sure to lower the bed in the crib down when the baby starts sitting up!)
    • Alterations made to cribs (you really don’t need to put the equivalent of rims on your baby’s crib)
    • The child becoming trapped between the crib and a wall or funiture

For more info, be sure to check out the release on CPSC’s web site:

Just don’t blame me if you start to feel like you need to let your kid sleep in a padded room, without any padding in the crib except for a bare mattress, of course, and a thin porous blanket to make it seem like she won’t get cold at night.
