New Features Coming to the iPhone in v3.0

March 17th, 2009 by Jonathan Schellack

Today Apple announced v3.0 of the iPhone software. Here’s a quick list of the new features that they promised for June, with the caveat that not all the features (e.g., A2DP and MMS) will be available on the 1st generation iPhone or iPod touch:

  • Copy, Cut, & Paste
  • Send multiple photos at one time
  • MMS! This will make my sister very happy :-)
  • Background push notifications for apps (let’s IM apps, and basically anything else let you know of new notifications, even when in other apps)
  • Updated BlueTooth, allowing compatability with wireless stereo (A2DP) headphones
  • Updated SDK, with new features that include more mapping in apps and the ability to control new 3rd party accessories
  • Peer-to-peer Bluetooth communication, allowing for data to be sent between iPhones directly, for things like multi-player gaming without going across the Internet
  • Landscape mode in email and all other (Apple) apps
  • Ability to forward or delete multiple text messages at a time
  • A new Apple voice memo app
  • Over-the-air syncing of non-Exchange, calDav calendars (i.e., Google and Yahoo calendars)
  • Spotlight – a new app allowing you to search for data across the iPhone
  • Sync notes
  • New stock app
  • Safari will include anti-Phishing technology and auto-fill
  • Paid apps can do subscription-based model and allow you to by add-ins (e.g., new levels) seamlessly, using you Apple/iTunes account
  • Youtube ratings and account support
  • LDAP
  • Audio and video tagging
  • On the phone iTunes account creation
  • Enhanced parental controls
  • Create meeting requests on the iPhone
  • Proxy support
  • Encrypted profiles
  • Shake to shuffle
  • HTML5 and built-in video support in Safari
  • Support for turn-by-turn navigation, if you use your own (not Google’s) maps
  • “100 new features” total, not all of which were given today

What was missing:

  • Video functionality
  • Tethering (the phone will support it, but the carriers still won’t for a least a little while longer)
  • No true background application support
  • Adobe Flash support
  • Syncing the iPhone via BlueTooth

Did I miss anything? Apple has some information up on their site now too: www.apple.com/iphone/preview-iphone-os/.

I think you got it dude! You’ve saved me a post :)
Think I’ll just link to you!

    Feel free! :-)
I’m curious,Conner – if I recall correctly, you have a 1st generation iPhone. Since it’s not getting all the new features, will that lead you to upgrade, particularly if Apple does release a new hardware version this Summer?

    Jonathan:

Many thanks for post re teach FF 5.3 (on Mac, 10.5.8) use Google apps for mail. Bummer is followed exactly, got choice of Google Apps in FF prefs but every time I click a mailto link (couldn’t find one for you) it tries to open Gmail, not Apps. Any advice?

Very beautiful kid, btw. Enjoy each other for a long time.

    Be well,

    David
