Time for a Refresh

I think that a much-needed update to the design and layout of this blog would do the blog some good. Hopefully it will also push me to blog more frequently as well. So look for more in this space, along those lines, soon.

Recent Downtime

Please accept my humble apologies for the recent downtime experienced here on my site. My web host was doing a migration to a new server, and I forgot to update the DNS records so that the domain name pointed to the new IP address (whoops!). That has, of course, been fixed now.

Hopefully things will be a bit snappier now, post-migration

Let it Snow

Given that it actually was snowing in the Baton Rouge area this morning (our first “heavy” snow since 1988!), I’ve added some snow flakes to my site (courtesy of the “Snow and More” WordPress plugin). Let me know if it annoys you .

Now Available: WordPress 2.7

Oooh, a snazzy new interface was just released for WordPress, the blogging engine that powers this and millions of other websites. If you don’t already blog and have ever wanted to, it couldn’t be easier!

The release promises to make blogging take fewer clicks, which is impressive, because right now it really does not take that many clicks already.

Not only that, but the update now includes automatic upgrades! Hooray! No more FTP!

I am curious, do those of you who use WordPress.com to host your blog already see the new, snazzy interface? For those of you who — like me — host your own blog, do you plan to immediately upgrade (have you already)?

Akismet Update – Proving Its Worth

Behind the scenes of (hopefully) every blog running on WordPress is a plugin called Akismet. Yesterday, Akismet updated their plugin for blocking spam comments on your (and my) blog to version 2.2.1, and I have now discovered the blessing of not having to manage spam on my blog. Akismet seamlessly (for the most part) parses all comments when they are submitted and filters out the evil spam ones (typically made by a machine), so that you get to see only the good stuff (they call it Ham), and I don’t waste my time approving comments.

To celebrate, I thought I would share with you what has made me so happy about all of this. Below is a chart showing just how much spam has been blocked out over the last six months: a grand total of 7928 spam comments, which account for more than 99% of all of the comments made on this blog (sadly, I don’t get more legitimate comments, though this is a great opportunity for you to change that!).

Grace vs Gustav

My fourteen-month-old wanted to play outside this afternoon, so we went outside for a few minutes while she enjoyed the feel of the grass on her bare feet. The question is, when she wants to go outside tomorrow while hurricane Gustav is storming (it’s already started raining), who will win?

Assuming that all of the cell towers are not down, I hope to be able to update my blog via text message tomorrow morning. So be sure to check back then. Also, my latest info (a “micro-blog”, if you will) can be found in the Twitter section on the About page of this site.

We expect to be perfectly fine, as the worst thing that will likely happen is we will lose power for several days, forcing us to eat canned chicken, ramen noodles, and lots of pudding. Please keep us and all of our neighbors here in South Louisiana in your prayers!
