Free CCs Coffee for Veterans Day

I don’t know how much they are advertising it, as there is no advertisement on their web site, but CC’s Community Coffee House – perhaps the best place to get a cup of joe here in Louisiana – is giving away free tall cups of coffee tomorrow, 11/11/2008, for Veteran’s Day, in honor of all American Veterans and their families.

Ooooh, a Coupon for Whole Foods

People I know occasionally refer to the Whole Foods Market grocery store as “Whole Paycheck”. Ok, maybe it’s more often than occasional. But if you’re looking to buy organic, really like their great selection of fresh produce, or just want to save some dinero, they’ve got a $5 coupon valid, from 10/15/08 to 10/22/08, on the purchase of $25 or more.

That ought to at least buy you one fish filet from their fresh seafood section. Maybe…

Hurricane Gustav – One Week Later

It’s been a week since the dust settled after Gustav (excluding sawdust from all the chainsaws). There are still huge swaths of the Baton Rouge area without power (including my parents):

In Louisiana, twenty-five people died during the storm and its aftermath. Yesterday’s rush-hour traffic was a nightmare for many commuters, with forty percent of traffic lights still not functioning across East Baton Rouge Parish.

Public schools remain closed for a second week. Many people’s homes were damaged; some destroyed. Please pray for those people, and also for those whom are still without power.

Baton Rouge Electrical Outages

For those of you who live and or work in the Greater Baton Rouge area, as do I, I thought this image might be useful. It’s a Google Maps map of Baton Rouge, overlaid with Entergy’s diagram of what, as of 6:00 AM today, they had restored since Hurricane Gustav struck on Monday. They have a long ways to go yet.

Baton Rouge is Dark Tonight

Thankfully we and our house are doing just fine. Apparently the entire Baton Rouge area is out of power, so I’m glad I don’t work for Entergy!

Gustav blew down lots of trees, but our little live oak out front made out ok – unlike our neighbors’, which is stuck at a 45 degrees angle.

We actually ventured out of the house earlier, driving to my parents’ and seeing dozens of downed trees along the way. Luckily none made the road impassable. I’d have some pictures for you, but I was driving.

I think we’ll be heading to bed early tonight, given that my iPhone only has so much juice, our daughtervis already down for the count, and there’s only so much you can do by candlelight.

Thanks for all if your prayers – they were certainly felt. Please continue to pray for our neighbors; we have already heard of several people whose homes were severely damaged.

Rainy Day

No surprise here, but it’s raining outside. The wind is certainly gusty, which makes me glad that the trees aren’t anywhere near us.

The good news is that we still have electricity (as do my parents at their place). The unfortunate thing for us, though, is that apparently today is the day that my A/C decided to quit cooling well. It’s only about 74 degrees inside, so with the fans it’s not bad, just annoying.

If anyone happens to have some spare freon that they wouldn’t mind dropping off over here before hurricane Gustav makes landfall (in a couple of hours from now), I’m totally willing to pay you cash! Let me know if there are by takers.

May – the Month of Graduations (in Pictures!)

So I’ve uploaded oodles of pictures from the previous two weekends’ trips to Wilmington, NC and Dallas, TX for our siblings’ separate graduations. We had a good trip, and now that I’m more recovered from being a bit ill and from traveling with a 10-month-old, hopefully there’ll be some more blog posts for your reading pleasure out soon.
